OCCC SIFE is engaged in the following projects for Spring 2012
Sam’s Step Up a Small Business Challenge
OCCC SIFE has partnered with a local bakery and received a grant to help a bakery located in NW OKC better promote their product. We can help them with a new store design, promotional materials, acquire new customers, or anything within budget that the groups thinks will help the business.
Why should you consider helping with this project?
By helping with this project, you can apply marketing principles learned in textbooks at OCCC. This experience will let students be exposed to daily decisions that a business must make for survival. Students are also encouraged to discover cost saving methods that can help the business. Therefore students are also exposed to a real life cost/benefit analysis.
Wal-Mart's Women’s Economic Empowerment
OCCC SIFE has partnered with and received a grant to help a local women’s church group. The church group has members that are facing tough economic hardships. The women are in need of a better awareness for financial literacy. This experience will expose students, in a safe environment, different socioeconomic challenges. Students will be asked to create educational materials on basic literacy materials, financial literacy, or anything the group deems acceptable to improve these women’s ability to better take care of their finances. Once again, this grant opportunity can expand a student’s understanding of material learned in the class. Students will be exposed to a wide variety of accounting and economic issues while working with Women’s Economic Empowerment.
American Free Enterprise Grant
OCCC SIFE has partnered with the American Chamber of Commerce and the Greater OKC Chamber of Commerce already engaged in a certain number of activities that may help fulfill the requirements of this project. For example, the survey of spending habits that SIFE is currently undertaking could be considered one of the major activities. OCCC SIFE has also implemented and entrepreneurship boot camp and an investment boot camp that could be included in the project. OCCC SIFE would like to add the following activities to make it a project that would benefit not only the US Chamber of Commerce, but also US Chamber of Commerce:
- Distributing The OKC Greater Chamber of Commerce and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce educational materials
- Holding a free enterprise event with emphasis on the importance of entrepreneurship in conjunction with the National Entrepreneurship Week if possible
- Organizing panel discussions
- Bringing speakers to the OCCC campus
By working with the American Free Enterprise Grant, a student may help a new business decide to open near OCCC’s campus because you have provided them with a better understanding of the OCCC student body. Students will be exposed to real life practical implications regarding statistics, accounting, and economics.
